Driving, Thriving, and Inspiring: Meet Ms. Mattie

Ouachita Nursing and Rehab recently had the honor and privilege to house and accommodate Ms. Mattie Upton, a 105 and a half, as she would say, very sweet lady. When we called to check on her, we asked if she could answer a couple of questions.

First and foremost, we asked her how she is doing. Being 105, and quickly approaching 106, is one thing. But being this age and still being able to do almost everything she wants is another.

Ms. Mattie stated that she is doing "great." She said, "My typical day begins at 7 am. I wake up, make my bed, eat a good breakfast, and sit down for a little TV." She also let us know that her stay here at ONRC was "wonderful" and that "everyone was so kind and caring and wanted me to be successful."

Ms. Mattie praised the therapy team, stating, "They were all so patient and kind with me. They quickly became my friends." She feels that therapy here at the facility gave her everything she needed to live independently.

With her birthday coming up, we asked her if she could have one thing for her gift, what would it be? Ms. Mattie said with no hesitation, "Kindness. I want everyone to be kind to one another." She wanted everyone to know that "you should always treat people the way you want to be treated. Love everyone. That's also the best advice I can give."

I asked her what her secret is for her good health and longevity, and she stated that "you have to have a good attitude and a good outlook on life. Stay positive and you will go a long way." She also stated, "God isn't finished with me yet, so until it's my time, I will be here to serve."

Ms. Mattie is a treasure. With her heart and strong mind, she is willing to do anything she puts her mind to. She can even still drive! We are thankful she chose to spend some time with us here at the facility and also share some valuable information.
